Watering Essentials for plants

Keeping plants hydrated is something I’ll preach about over and over again—because it’s so important! Plants need water, especially during the scorching summer heat, but even during the long months of winter watering is vital. Today, I’m sharing the best ways to water your plants to keep them lush and thriving all year long. Plus, I’ve got a list of my must-have watering essentials to show you how I keep my plants happy and hydrated. Let’s dive in!

How to water Plants Properly

Keeping your plants watered properly is the key to a thriving garden, especially during those hot Southern summers! Before planting anything, remove it from it’s original container and soak the rootball in a five gallon bucket of water. This allows it to be fully hydrated and ready to plant!

Here’s more of my best tips for keeping your outdoor (and indoor!) plants hydrated and healthy:

Outdoor Watering Tips

  1. Deep Watering Sessions: Water your plants long and slow, three times a week. This encourages deep root growth and helps them withstand heat.

  2. Daily Watering in Extreme Heat: Once temperatures hit 100°F or above, switch to daily watering to prevent stress and wilting.

  3. Soaker Hoses: Save time and water by using a soaker hose on a timer. It delivers water directly to the roots, minimizing evaporation.

  4. Rain Gauges: Keep track of how much rain your garden gets with a rain gauge. This helps you know when to supplement with additional watering. Find my favorite rain gauge here!

  5. Rain Barrels: Collect rainwater in barrels to use during dry spells—it’s eco-friendly and free!

  6. Watering Bags for Trees: These slow-release bags wrap around the base of young trees, providing a steady supply of water. Perfect for newly planted trees or during droughts!

My absolute favorite watering wand is a Dramm Rain Wand! Tommy used these in the greenhouse because they don’t damage the plants but still put a good volume of water out. It creates the perfect soft rain shower for your garden!

Indoor Watering Tips

  1. Moisture Meters: Take the guesswork out of watering indoor plants with a moisture meter. It tells you exactly when your plants need a drink.

  2. Watering Globes: Fill a glass watering globe with water and insert it into the soil. It slowly releases moisture, keeping your plants hydrated while you’re away.

  3. Ice, Ice Baby: Use ice cubes for watering finicky plants. Ice melts slowly, releasing just enough hydration to keep them happy. Just be sure the ice doesn’t touch the stem or plant leaves—only the soil!

With these tips and tools, you’ll keep your plants lush and thriving all season long—no matter how hot it gets!
