A Beautiful Boxwood Garden

Listen closely, because I have some fantastic news for you: You can plant beautiful boxwoods in gorgeous planters, and you’ll never have to worry about watering them or killing them again! Boxwoods can be finicky, but they are a wonderfully substantial show of greenery, so instead I planted a container with these Faux Boxwood Planter Fillers from Ballard Designs. The oversize spheres are nice and full and come in several sizes that would normally take years to grow! The leaves are made of recycled polyethylene and steel wire, and they’re UV-protected to withstand sun and rain—which makes them perfect for outdoors in any zone.

Get the look:

1.     Choose an outdoor planter with proper drainage. I used the Rodin Planter from Ballard for its large size and sophisticated lines.

2.     Fill it up with a good potting soil, and pop on the topiary ball.

3.     Next, I wanted to dress up the greenery with a skirt of color by underplanting the boxwood with live plants! I just stuffed flowers in around the base for extra oomph! You can choose what works best for the location of your planter, either sun or shade.

4.     Don’t forget: You can change out the color of your flowers with the seasons—in the fall, you can even scatter mini pumpkins around the base for a seasonal punch! Just keep any underplantings watered so they’re moist to the touch.

Once you prep your planters, flank them on either side of vignette seating (I chose the Miles Redd Bermuda Garden Bench from Ballard because the glossy white finish is a great counterpoint to the heavy stone planters), or place them on either side of a door on the front porch or a patio. These boxwood planters create great symmetry anywhere you need it outdoors!
