A Backyard Tour of the HGTV Smart Home 2022
I am so excited to share a huge part of my work life with you all this week! This year, I was chosen to transform the landscape at the HGTV Smart Home 2022 in Wilmington, North Carolina. Using one of my customized Bespoke Garden Plans, we transformed this compact backyard space into a perfect party pad for friends and family. We have intimate areas for family gathering that can become socially sizable in an instant. Let’s take a look!

Small spaces are a great chance to maximize sweet spots that work marvelously together or apart. To set up a successful scheme, we thought about our choices, flushed out ideas, and then got to work composing the configuration.
Starting in the side garden this treasure of a laidback lounge offers a place to tip-toe into refuge. I chose to plant aromatics like lavender, thyme, and rosemary for spa scents that can also be snipped for a fresh addition to dinner. This hardworking haven is kept healthy with drip irrigation—easy peasy, so this area is more about enjoying than working hard.

Follow me around to the true back of the house to the outdoor grilling station, which looks out over the entire lawn so you can stay connected to guests as you’re searing steaks. The adjacent porch features phantom screens that lift to provide a picturesque view of the Cape Fear River. I wanted to bridge the outdoor kitchen with extra patio party space, and the screens were an ideal solution!

From here, family, friends, and neighbors can spill out onto the manicured lawn and make their way over to the private pergola. A TV for all the sports viewing tucks away when all that’s needed is the natural white noise of a rippling pool.
This lush pergola is perched adjacent to the pool’s sundeck, where you can dip your toes into the gunite pool that only drops down a few feet! I love this gorgeous dipping pool because it’s an affordable price point for anyone who wants a refreshing respite but doesn’t want to invest in a full-size pool.

I intentionally kept maintenance minimal, so this yard isn’t a constant source of upkeep! Details like the private-enclosure shower on the left side of the house and the toasty fire pit positioned at the apex of the pergola-pool triangle elevate the entire plan. This is truly a backyard utopia that will stretch through all the seasons of entertaining!
