Beat the Heat: Water Your Plants Well
Watering plants is vital to keeping them alive and thriving. I always get tons of questions regarding how to water plants, so today I’m sharing a few of my favorite tips for easy, proper watering!
How do I know when plant needs water?
● Observe plant for changes like dullness or a subtle change in foliage color and wilting or curling leaves.
● Check soil for dryness. (If it’s dry to the touch, it’s time to water!)
● Look for reduced growth or a reduction in flowers or fruit.
Where should I water my plant?
● Water directly at the base of the plant into the soil, so water will go to the root zone.
● For fir trees or other trees with foliage that is similar, give the green a shower of water to help your tree stay alive and happy.
When is the best time to water?
● Early morning or evening—just not in the heat of the day! This helps less water to be lost due to evaporation.
How do I water my orchid and fern collections?
● My favorite, easiest way to water these compositions is to fill up a large pitcher with ice cubes and place them throughout the soil of each plant once a week. (Don’t be afraid to load them up!) You can also try this method on your other houseplants if you are one who forgets to water consistently.
What are some tips to know when to water grass?
● If footprints remain when grass is walked on, it’s time to water.
● Another way to know your grass needs water is if it turns dull, then blueish, and eventually straw-colored or brown.
How can I make my ferns green and lush?
● Mix warm water with 2 to 3 pinches of Epsom salts, and pour over your ferns. Be sure the Epsom salts are fully dissolved to prevent them from burning your ferns!
Are there any hard and fast guidelines for watering?
● Honestly no, but for any plant, once it is placed in the ground or in a pot, it should be regularly watered in order for the roots to establish. Once they’ve established, you can relax with the watering and only do so when the plant gives you hints that it’s thirsty.
Happy Gardening!
