My Five Favorite Houseplants
Easy-to-care-for plants to pretty-up your home. (Bonus: You can’t kill them!)
Houseplants are such an easy and beautiful way to add green to your space any time of the year. I love, love, love mine! There are many different options, depending on your home, lighting, and temperature. I am going to share five of my favorites that will brighten up any room! One of them is sure to be a gorgeous fit for your home, too. These houseplants can be found at most local garden centers or even on Amazon!
Snake Plant or Mother-in-Law’s Tongue
This classic plant features tall dark leaves and sturdy structure. It is incredibly hardy and simple to care for. Just water once a month or when the soil is completely dry. (Tip: Do your best not to bend the leaves, or they will snap!)
Silver Queen or Aglaonema
This is such a fabulous houseplant! Tall and beautiful with variegated green color, silver queen will be your new favorite, too. This plant does well out of direct or even strong indirect light; it’s best to place silver queen five to six feet away from any light source. Like most plants, silver queen does not do well with water sitting in the bottom of its pot; make sure yours has good drainage. You’ll find you need only water about once or twice a month. Easy peasy!
Anthurium
Most houseplants are known for their greenery, but anthurium brings a pop of color to interiors. The pretty heart-shaped flowers can bloom in colors from red to peach or white and last up to six weeks. This low-maintenance plant doesn’t care for direct light and prefers to be kept five to six feet away from it.
Pothos
Pothos is a go-to for many people, and for good reason! It’s a super-easy plant to care for, and the leaves come in a variety of green shades—many are beautifully marbled, adding to the plant’s appeal! Just be careful not to let its roots sit in water! (I keep mine in a silver Champagne bucket in my bathroom where it has thrived for close to a year!) If you are new to houseplants, pothos is the choice for you!
Maidenhair Fern
Maidenhair fern is another favorite of mine! While many indoor plants thrive with little attention, maidenhair is more delicate and needs extra love and affection. I don’t plant mine directly into a pot; instead, I set the plastic pot it comes in into a planter. This method allows me to keep water constantly at the bottom of the pot, because maidenhair fern likes “wet feet.” With proper care and indirect light, this feathery fern will be a great addition to your home!
